Woke Mama: Naomi

IMG_1777.JPGWant to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name: Naomi
Age: 24
Babe: Zion, June 2016

What does being a Woke Mama mean to you?

Being a woke mama means so much to me. Literally EVERYTHING!! To me it means not conforming to society’s expectations of what they think I should be, how I should be it and why i’m not doing it that way.

It also means teaching my son to be the beautiful and free spirit he was born to be, breaking free from the norm and embracing the weird and wonderful side.

It means teaching my son the rich history of his ancestors that he won’t get taught in school. It means teaching my son to respect his body enough to know what he’s putting in it. It means teaching my son the importance of self love.

It means taking my son out after its rained (when he’s older) to jump in muddy puddles. Why? because in that moment he would be having the time of his life, he’ll look up and see me jumping right next to him.

Life’s not about waiting for sunshine, it’s about jumping in muddy puddles, taking treks through the forest, singing your favourite song at the top of your voice. And last but not least.. teaching him to put LOVE into everything he does and LOVE will be returned in abundance.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

I didn’t choose gentle parenting, gentle parenting chose me (hahaha). In all honesty I’d never heard of gentle parenting until recently. I’d always just thought of it as parenting.

As a child I was brought up in a very loving environment. Taught to treat others how you wish to be treated, do not judge, and respect others. I cannot imagine raising Zion any other way than I was brought up. Love, happiness and understanding is the foundation for our little family.

Favourite aspect so far hmm… I think it’s all been pretty bloody amazing if i’m honest! Zion has been incredible. I think breastfeeding is up there in my favourite parts of motherhood and the moment running up to it. As soon as Zion see’s my breast he does this funny creepy-ish little laugh as he goes in for a drink, it is hilarious.

We are both flourishing daily as mother and son. He never ceases to amaze me.

Most awesome moment so far?

Definitely when he took his first steps to me at 8 months, it was very bittersweet. WHERE DID MY TINY BABY GO?!?!

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Hands down it has to be the not sleeping through the night.. I think I’ve googled “how to get a breastfed baby to sleep through the night” around 1,000 times and looked through every single blog — I have now realised that he will sleep through when he’s ready and i’m at peace with that (very sleep deprived peace but, peace none the less).

I try not to get stressed too much.. but when I do, I just think about how Zion is feeling. Although he is very advanced, he still is just a 1 year old who can’t fully communicate his needs to me, so I take a deep breath and power on through. 🙂

How do you juggle gentle parenting life with work?

I work evenings so it’s not too bad for me. My partner will come home from work and bath Zion and put him to sleep and then he’ll wake up for a feed just after I get back from work.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT! The yogurt face, The “we’ve just got ready how are we this messy already” moments, The poopy nappies, The tantrums, The night feeds, everything.

It feels like time is flying by, (I honestly don’t know where the year went). Motherhood is a gift that unfortunately not everyone is blessed enough to experience, so cherish the good, the bad and the ugly “not today!” days.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

It Naturally has to be Lauryn Hill – To Zion, its such a beautiful song
