Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.
Name: Kerianne 33
Baby: Isla, 17 months
What does being a woke mama mean to you?
Doing my own research! I am a research scientist by trade and as much as I value the opinions of experiences mamas and those I love and trust, in the end I need to go with my gut feeling. This will become even more important as Isla grows.
What is your favourite aspect of gentle parenting?
The magic mute key that on demand breastfeeding is… and all the cuddles at night
Most awesome moment so far?
My 13 month daughter travelled with me and my university rugby team as we won promotion to premiership…. at 33 years old I breastfed before and after the match — and still kept up with the youngens!
Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?
Night feeding while teething in the family bed post 1 year. I think breastfeeding and co-sleeping made the first 8 months easier than many mums.
But at 17 months she is still not sleeping though, takes up more room, and when sick or teething just needs to be within 5 inches of the boobies at all times. Touched out is a thing sometimes.
I am really lucky to have a great partner and great experience with au pairs who can take her off my hands for 10 minutes so I can have a cup of coffee… or just pee without being busted in on.
How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?
I am a full time PhD student and we have been very lucky to find great au pairs that love Isla like a family member. At the same time we have had a great relationship with them watching our netflix shows, chatting and having a drink in the evenings. With our closest family over 2 hours away we need the extra set of hands.
Any advice you would give to new mums?
You don’t need nearly as much crap as they tell you. Leaving the house: 2 nappies, wipes, 1 change of clothes (PJs even!), drink and a snack will be fine 99.9% of the time.
What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
Hamilton… it doesn’t help I am an expat and hubby would find me and Isla dancing in the kitchen getting dinner ready
