Woke Mama: Farrah

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name: Farrah
Age: 24
Baby: Ezra, 09/02/2016 – 04/2016. Baby B, due 09/2017

What does being a Woke Mama mean to you?

Raising a kid with their head screwed on right. Raising a kid that is sensitive to the world around them, to nature and to people, but a kid that understands their own worth and acts accordingly.

Also, it means trying my best to educate myself to those things, asking questions and taking responses into actual consideration. Letting other people’s experiences inform my actions and the way I raise my children.

Generally, openness, openness, openness; to other people, to information, to experiences, to everything.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

I won’t and haven’t gone out of my way to chose a parenting style. I think it’s naive to think that you can just pick a thing with a list of criteria and follow it all.

It’s more realistic to pick and mix. My parenting style will be logical — I see no long-term good gained from things like crying it out or spanking and so on.

And isn’t our end goal some good? Good kids in mind and body. I want my kids to be confident in themselves, their thoughts and their actions.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Well that’s obvious. Losing my son. Having to deal with his passing.

That is beyond anything I ever thought I would have to deal with or think about, and I still find myself in disbelief that it really happened and that I’m still here through it.

The entire situation is surreal. Stressful moments come as a result of it daily, no one day is without. I cope by carrying on — each issue must be overcome one way or another.

In the future? I anticipate a lot of struggles relating to this, from over-protectiveness to paranoia.

If going back to work how will you juggle gentle parenting life?

With the help of other people. Being a single parent means that you have to rely on the goodness of your friends. You have to make sure that the people you surround yourself with are kind, reliable, selfless people.

You’ve got to get yourself a killer girl gang.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

There’s no one way to do things, but knowledge is power. There are some things that you should not ignore, such as safe sleeping advice. Get all the information from reputable sources and go from there.

Everyone around you wants to help you, from medical professionals to other parents (but other parents are professionals at their own children, not yours). Everyone wants to help you and keep you and your babies healthy and happy.

And chill: there’s so much to beat ourselves up about already.
