Woke Mama: Cheryl-Anne

Screenshot_20170910-234849Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Cheryl-Anne, 26

Baby: 6-month old Euphoria

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

It means showing my daughter how to be as humanity was intended to be, not the programmed sheep that our governments and ‘civilised, advanced first world’ societies tell us we should be.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

My favourite part of it is letting my daughter be a baby, comforting her when she needs it instead of forcing her to grow up and be independent for my own selfish reasons — no crying it out etc — when she is ready to sleep alone she we will know. I won’t force anything on her.

I want her to be a confident woman in and of herself one day, not depending on others or material things or status / income to dictate her self worth

Most awesome moment so far?

Waking up and seeing her little face next to me every morning, INCREDIBLE!!!

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

I cope by reminding myself that whatever my wants or needs are, hers are far greater and more important to me.

So when I’m tired and having a particularly hard night or day, I try to parent with empathy by putting myself in her shoes.

She literally just wants a mummy or daddy cuddle because she is teething or has growing pains or something; how can I not cope when I think of it from her perspective?

How will you juggle going back to work with gentle parenting?

I haven’t decided yet to be honest. I’m on maternity leave and had every intention to go back to work, however now that I am here I know I’ve faced too much to just offload my baby into care.

Nobody will love her or take care of her like I can! It’s a decision I can’t face unless I have people I know and trust completely looking after her. I really value her safety over financial needs for the time being.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Keep going!! Trust your instincts, don’t let people tell you what you should and shouldn’t be doing, Co sleeping? Great? Breastfeeding over 6 months? Great! Don’t want your child to eat meat? Amazing! Be confident in your choices and stick by them no matter what the nay-sayers say

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
