Woke Mama: Gill

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Gill, 29

Baby: Arthur, 7 weeks

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

Being a woke Mama means bringing up my little man in the most compassionate way possible.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

I choose gentle parenting as it just makes sense. I believe in the fourth trimester and that babies need closeness, tenderness, gentle love and care.

It is impossible for babies to “manipulate” us. I follow his cues and trust my instinct as a mother. I really believe that despite him still being relatively new that we are in complete harmony with one another. This to me is the reward of gentle parenting.

Most awesome moment so far?

Arthur’s landing earthside. Labour was the craziest most primal experience of my life resulting in the most incredible little being in our lives.

He clocked my face while breastfeeding the other day and cracked the biggest smile, that was pretty awesome 🙂

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

My biggest struggle so far has been being away from my home in Ireland. I’m missing my own Mumma and Pappa and them watching Arthur grow and change so quickly. I cope by taking lots of pictures – trying to get lots of FaceTime in, while also getting out of the house for walks.

Also being kind to myself. It’s OK to not leave the house some days to rest up and cuddle when needed.

And reminding myself constantly how blessed we are – he’s so chill and chubby we call him our little Buddha babe!

How will you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I have to return to work after one year. I will be going back part time however, so I can have a real balance in our lives and maintain Arthur as my focus. It will kill me having to put him into childcare, so we’ll see whether it’s worth it after my three months back.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Be kind to yourself – you’re rocking it. Trust your motherly instincts. Don’t feel bad for not leaving the house some days. Don’t feel pressure from other people’s opinions.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
