Woke mama: Harriet

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time

Name & Age: Harriet Jarvis, 25

Baby: Lily Anne Grace, July 2017

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

I want my daughter to grow up believing that she can achieve anything that she sets her heart and mind to. I will raise her to be kind, patient, understanding and a friend to everyone she meets.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

I was brought up in a fantastically loving and warm family environment. I was encouraged in every way to be my own person and to be a kind and loyal friend.

I was taught that I was important and that my opinion mattered from a very young age. I hope that Lily too will feel that she can always talk to me about anything without the fear of judgement or ridicule.

Most awesome moment so far?

Introducing our beautiful baby girl to her grandparents on both sides! Grampasaurus, Grandma-Books, Nana and Grandad all fell head over heels in love as soon as they met her!

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Me and my husband (Nathan) are both self employed musicians and spending so much time apart is tricky. It really makes me appreciate family days together though – they’re the best!

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I have been at work (part time) since my little one was 6 weeks old. She’s 12 weeks now and it still feels far too early for me to be away from her. I miss her so much each day I’m away but know that she’s in very safe hands with her daddy!

It was very important for us to know that for at least her first 6 months she is only left with family members when I’m at work. My parents and grandparents have been amazing by coming to help us out when we’ve both had to work.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Surround yourself with other new mums if at all possible! The support that I have had within my local community of other mums has been incredible and has helped me through the most difficult and worrying times that you experience as a first time Mummy.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

Say Hello To The Sun (Baby sensory song!) my god it’s such an ear worm! 😀 and my little Lily loves it!

Like what ya see? We’ll be introducing more awesome Woke Mamas. But we want to hear from YOU. Share your stories on social media using #WokeMamas or write your answers here. ❤
