Woke Mama: Elysabet

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Elysabet, 32
 Azzy, 17 months

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

Following your maternal instincts instead of the social norms and being mindful of the words you say… and questioning everything!

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

I wanted a deeper bond with Azzy. Weaning and scheduling him I feel would create anxiety which can be super scary for such a little being. They just want to know that you’re there.

I love watching him explore himself and sound, and finding new ways to move. It reminds me how powerful we truly are.

Most awesome moment so far?

He gets mad when we’re eating together and I refuse to give him the spoon — he gets frustrated because he wants to do it himself. When I give him that token of independence he loves it! It’s almost bitter sweet, but it’s amazing to watch him want to do it himself.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Creating balance between projects and short term goals. He demands all my energy and I love it! But sometimes, yes, it can be hard to create balance.

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I became a holistic doula early this year. The practice helps me assist in the birth of a new generation and build a community of supported families.

Most of my work is from home and hands on with each family, which allows me to bring him  to work (not to the labors but for pre/postnatal care).

Any advice you would give to new mums?

We are the protectors and keepers of these little lights! Only you know that light in such an intimate way. Understand this is your power, this is your honor …and what our world is doing is trying to dim that light. We must keep it shinning bright!

They need us present and willing to say NO when laws, family and society yell YES!

We are the gate keepers, the wisdom healers.

We are magic — and we have a duty to these beautiful little beings.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

Asian flute sounds… it keeps the environment calm and ‘exploration mode’ on.
