Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Katie, 28

Baby: Jasper, 6 months

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

Trusting my instincts and allowing what may be.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

It’s slowly taking shape for me. It’s liberating letting go and flowing with what my baby boy requires and also what I require regardless of what a book, neighbour or article says.

I try to keep things simple now for both of us and not over analyse how things have been done or “ought to be” done.

Most awesome moment so far?

WOOSH! Can I choose? Rocking my natural birth in a foreign country that was discouraging me from it.

With Jasper it would be when he was in my arms at 3 months old and just looked up and made direct eye contact. He really saw me and was looking at me and just started talking for the first time. A wave of love and elation rushed up through me and poured back down, it was amazing.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Living in a country away from family and friends. A country where you can’t speak the language (not that well anyway) and is very different from your own culture. This is also good too and a choice I am happy I have made.

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I am very fortunate to be starting a new job where I can bring Jasper with me. This placement is also supportive of me breastfeeding which is fantastic.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

You’re doing your absolute best and your baby loves you for it. Breathe and soak it all in.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

Not a year yet, but half way there! Mostly upbeat music when I need to shake off a slump, and pick up the energy.
