Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Helen, 37

Baby: Jonah Samuel, born June 2016 on the summer solstice.

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

It means trusting your mama self unequivocally.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

Gentle parenting is me feeling my way through motherhood rather than reading about it in a book. Feeling togetherness with my son rather than seeing him as a separate being to be trained or gamed.

I respect my son’s needs, while still respecting my own needs. What I love most about gentle parenting is that I’ve been able to choose a different way to raise my son to the way I was raised. It’s so powerful to be able to choose.

Most awesome moment so far?

Giving birth is the most amazing experience. The moment I became a mama, and welcomed our son in to the world.

But, the little moments are also amazing. Like when he comes to me to fall asleep every evening. It’s so precious to have a bond where he feels comfortable and protected enough to fall asleep in my arms.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Figuring out breastfeeding. We struggled at the start, but I’m so glad we persevered. My husband, family, and friends support me during stressful moments.

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I’m working from home right now during Jonah’s naps, I feel so lucky to be able to do so.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Trust yourself, and let your baby lead the way. Go to mum and baby groups to be with other new mums. And take lots of photos – time moves so quickly, and babyhood is short.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

Devi Prayer – Hymn to the Divine Mother Akasha by Craig Pruess and Ananda Devi. This music sums up everything it means to be a mama. Soft and gentle, but deep and powerful.
