Woke Mama: Destiny

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Destiny 20

Kids: Alanna 2 & Nova 7 months

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

To me it means knowing every option available to you during pregnancy, birth and after.

Being woke to the options you have for your children and doing things differently to others because that’s the way you prefer.

Like my home birth for example. Sooo many people thought I was absolutely insane, but after I did it, it made them realize how magical it really is.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

I chose gentle parenting because number one, it seems so much easier for me. And number two, I just want the best for my babies. Not only during pregnancy but after they’re born– and honestly I feel like it has a very big impact on how your child will be when they grow up as well.

Most awesome moment so far?

Definitely my home birth and placenta encapsulation which I did myself. Most empowering thing ever.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Umm my biggest struggle is balancing being back to normal after having a baby. Each postpartum phase has been a little difficult for me, but I enjoy being pregnant and having babies so that always overpowers my struggle.

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

Luckily right now I am a stay at home mom but I am planning on doing some college this year so I can be accepted into midwifery school — so it may be a little difficult for me to adjust but I’m hoping for the best.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

My advice is look into every option and no matter what, it is totally OK to do what you like to do.

Some people put shit on that you need to get the epidural, you need to do this and that… and some people put shit that you need to try to go natural and you need to do all these natural things. But at the end of the day you only have yourself and your family and — whatever makes you happy you should do.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

On my soundtrack this year I am doing things for myself. I feel like I’m always focusing on making other people happy before myself, so I decided this 2018 I am going to school to better myself and to do something I love.
