Woke Mama: Nix

audition mum and L on train

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Nix, 37

Baby: Lôki, 8 months

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

Doing what I can to change things for the better. Lobbying, marching and being politically and socially active. Writing and performing protest songs.

Also, understanding that one can never be fully ‘woke’. Wokeness is a process. For me, it’s a continuous, spiritual learning journey to connect to and respect all people/living things.

What made you choose gentle parenting? And what is your favourite aspect of it?

I evolved into it to be fair. I did a lot of self-healing over the years allowing for it, following past trauma. I’m certain things would have been different if I’d have become a parent sooner.

As a teacher, I respect Scandinavian pedagogies and am choosing Danish ‘honest hygge’ style of parenting. I want to break past negative karmic/familial cycles.

I LOVE the feeling that I am allowing a human to create themselves, merely guiding and facilitating.

Most awesome moment so far?

Finding that Lôki was the missing puzzle piece I’ve been looking for all along.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Other people and their opinions/judgements/comments

How will you juggle work with gentle parenting?

Sadly, money dictates and I have no option. At the moment, I have no idea how…

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Listen to your heart. Be gentle to yourself.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

Magnificent‘ by Elbow was playing as Lôki came into the world (in my living room). It still makes me cry happy tears!

She is a talented one — you can listen to dnb and dubstep tracks by Nix on Soundcloud! <333
