Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.
Name & age: Jo, 41
I’m a child free Doula with over 20 years experience of supporting families in a variety of roles. I’m currently writing a birth and newborn parental prep course ‘Kindred Parents’ where I’ll be advocating gentle and natural parenting methods.
How did you end up doing gentle parenting?
Supporting my good friend of 10 years and becoming a child free Doula.
What does being a woke mama mean to you?
Being a woke Doula to me means walking this path with families, with my main motivation in kindness and compassion.
Most awesome moment so far?
The countless families I’ve supported over the years and the love and gratitude I’ve felt from them.
Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?
A year ago, a family hired me as their birth Doula. The mum’s waters broke, but she wanted to stay at home and wait for contractions. I supported her.
When she arrived at the hospital the risk book was thrown at her and the family ran with that fear.
I didn’t even attend the birth, but was scapegoated for “what could have gone wrong”.
The birth ended with a healthy baby, yet the family were considering seeking legal action for a birth I didn’t attend. This is the power of fear!
Any advice you would give to new mums?
What does your instinct tell you?
What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
My current soundtrack is Nick Hakim
