Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Natalie, 34

Baby: Lily, 20 months

How did you end up doing gentle parenting?

From the moment I knew I was pregnant, I started following my intuition.

This led me to choose a home birth in order to provide the most gentle and loving arrival from womb to world.

This beautiful experience also inspired me to follow my heart and become a Doula.

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

It means that I respect my daughter Lily as a fully conscious individual.

I don’t try to pressure her into doing things in a certain way that only benefits my needs, or play differently than what comes naturally to her.

I do my best to create a safe and supportive environment for her to explore.

Most awesome moment so far?

The moment Lily was born.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

When Lily was 3 weeks old I was hospitalised with a severe Staph infection in my left breast. I continued breastfeeding even though it was the worst pain I have ever experienced (yes, even worse than labour).

When I encounter stressful moments, I try to slow down and become observant instead of reacting negatively.

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I own my own business, working as a Doula, which gives a lot of flexibility.

We recently moved from Copenhagen to Toronto, where we were lucky to find a small daycare with just 5 children, run by a very supportive and gentle caregiver.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Take time to reboot without feeling guilty. Being a mum is hard work.

You have to take care of yourself, to take care of your baby. So enjoy some me time and return refreshed and full of energy for your little one(s).

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

Throughout my pregnancy I listened to “Devi Prayer” and every night Lily falls asleep to that same song.
