Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.
Name & age: Niki, 27
Baby: Sage, 10 months
How did you end up doing gentle parenting?
I grew up with an addict mother. I also had a spiritual awakening a few years back and became very conscious of myself and started questioning the world around me.
What does being a woke mama mean to you?
It means being conscious and aware of yourself, your environment and your baby. It means making informed decisions from your heart and soul.
It means not being perfect and allowing yourself to be okay with making mistakes, but learning from them.
Most awesome moment so far?
I can’t pick any one moment these past 19 months of pregnancy and his life have been a beautiful eye-opening journey.
Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?
At first breastfeeding; I always have been incredibly insecure with my breasts but breastfeeding has completely transformed my view of them.
I have now been breastfeeding 10 months and it was so worth it.
I try to stay present and in the moment. My mom also died of an overdose when I was 4 months pregnant. It’s been very difficult to work through.
How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?
I went back to work after 4 months and it was very rough. I have gotten used to it and when I am with my son I really appreciate and enjoy it. It has not changed my parenting style.
Any advice you would give to new mums?
Listen to your heart and soul and just go with your natural instincts. It’s a truly beautiful journey becoming a mother and you and your child grow and learn together. Also, be kind to yourself.
What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
A lot of meditation music, as well as some 80s music like Prince and Bowie
The world needs major changes. I am honoured to be part of conscious parenting. We are raising the spiritual warriors society needs.
