Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.
Name & age: Kate, 31
Baby: Keith Moon, almost 1
How did you end up doing gentle parenting?
It’s just what worked. It clicked in my head one day when I was pushed beyond my stress limit.
I looked at my son and thought, why would I yell at you for my stress? You are my blessing and if there’s one thing I have learned in life it is to be beyond thankful for blessings.
It has transferred to all areas of my life. Cut off in traffic? They must have an emergency. Dog eats the baby’s toy? Eh, he has 100 others. Work is stressful? Work is what keeps a roof over our heads and my job is what has helped me develop into the woman I am today.
What does being a woke mama mean to you?
Not pushing my ideals on others but listening when someone does ask my advice. Ensuring most importantly that I don’t judge other women for their decisions (this one’s hard but so important!).
Most awesome moment so far?
Hyperlactating – I’ve donated 7,000 oz to the Milk Bank and 2,000 to a new mom in need. I plan to keep donating as long as I can.
Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?
Watching other people feed Keith when he was a newborn. I didn’t realize it at the time because I kept telling myself this is what you have to do to go back to work but looking back I now realize how impacted I was watching others feed him while I pumped. Now I just hand him his own bottle!
How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?
We found an in-home daycare that put our minds at ease. We will transfer to a structured daycare when he’s 2 but knowing this woman who has worked with children for 25 years is taking care of him helps so much!
I miss him every day but I am so focused at work because I want to make sure I walk out the door at 5pm. It has really helped me complete tasks in a timely manner.
We also never bring work home anymore. If we have a bad day we call on the drive home and get it out so by the time we pick up Keith we are fully dedicated to him.
Any advice you would give to new mums?
You do you. Don’t read into the negative. The internet is a very scary place for new moms and if someone is putting you down – run away fast. Don’t feel pressured to be like anyone else. If possible, work out. The endorphins really help.
What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
Disney. Pretty much everything Disney. Plus Ed Sheeran’s Perfect.
