Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.
Name & age: Erica, 30
Babies: Arria (2) and Jaiyce (4 months)
How did you end up doing gentle parenting?
It’s something that we fell into for the most part.
We try to avoid spankings as much as possible because after a while we believe they may not be as effective in disciplining — but aside from that, we feel like Arria is really smart for her age. So we just try to reason with her and let her know that her actions have consequences.
What does being a woke mama mean to you?
Being aware of how your presence can change and affect the world. Also realizing that through faith you have the power to exercise and manifest whatever you speak out loud.
Most awesome moment so far?
Hearing my babies laugh. It’s such a small thing, but whenever I hear them laugh from their gut, it gives me great satisfaction and makes me feel like I’m doing something right.
That and booking 2 gigs to do some video work with my babies. That’s a life vision I have, and slowly but surely God is making it come to life as he sees fit! 🙂
Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?
Juggling my need to create (blogging, video, and other personal projects) while momming.
It’s really tough making time to do both without feeling like I’m sacrificing one for the other — time with the family and making sure home life is taken care of versus me fulfilling my need to make stuff and do things for myself.
So far, most of the time I just have to bite the bullet and work late at night into the morning hours in order to get my creative stuff done.
Luckily my husband is AMAZING — so he handles the kids in the mornings (he works late afternoon). Once he leaves for work, by then most of the time I’m awake and clocking into “mommy mode.”
As far as stressful moments go, I just try to close my eyes, take a deep breath, and say a prayer asking God for patience. Real talk.
How will you juggle work with gentle parenting?
I’m not sure when I’ll be going back to work, and honestly don’t even want to begin to think about it. Hopefully some of my personal projects will pop off so I won’t have to! ;-P
Any advice you would give to new mums?
Cultivate and nurture your tribe. Motherhood and the journey of parenting is so much more fun when you have friends who understand and can relate.
Not only that, but your mom tribe will support you in ways you wouldn’t have even thought necessary… it’s part of the only way I have been able to pursue/invest in my personal projects.
My mom tribe supports each other, and we all want to see each other win!
What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
Lauryn Hill always (the Unplugged Album), Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Lianne La Havas and SZA
