Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Chaneen, 25

Baby: Jasmine, 10 months

How did you end up doing gentle parenting?

I didn’t listen to any advice, I didn’t read any books, I just did what I wanted to do, because what I wanted felt right.

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

Understanding that every baby is different, which we all accept — and therefore every adult is different (which we tend not to accept so much).

Because of this I get to take what I was from the ‘normal’ or accepted ways of doing things and throw in a bit of me and my own pizzazz.

Most awesome moment so far?

Oh man. This is difficult. When my little J first said Mama. Which is at some point in the future. Joking.

My most awesome moment must be the night we had been struggling to put baby girl to sleep. We eventually blacked out the room, swaddled her, put her in the swing on a tshirt of mine (for the scent), played some womb sounds from YouTube and looked at each other. We couldn’t stop (silent) laughing at how silly we’d become and at how bossy a 2.5 Mmnth old could be.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

I’m going to say experiencing symptoms of post-natal depression and not know it was PPD.

I felt really alone in general and in how I felt.

I had awful thoughts running riot in my mind, I was exhausted and it seemed like no one could ever understand.

But it all got better when This Morning did a feature and I could relate. It got better because I could research and talk to people about it.

I’ve found sharing my feelings (I very often overshare, apparently) helps so so so much.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Do what feels right for you. Everyone can tell you what they did and what their experiences were but none of them were you, none of them raised your child.
