Woke Mama Lauren

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Lauren, 30

Baby: Amaya, 2

How did you end up doing gentle parenting?

I think I took the easy(ier) route. For some reason I could not see beyond the next 24 hours for at least the first 9 months after Amaya was born.

I didn’t think about forming habits and the future I was just trying to keep us both alive and sane.

This meant that responding to her and her needs at all times became a given. It also meant that all pre-arranged plans could be cancelled at a moment’s notice, just because.

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

Being open to anything and everything that will allow me to become a better parent. And modelling to my daughter that changing views and ideas is normal part of personal growth.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

When my exclusively breastfed daughter refused the bottle for months.

I am lucky to have so many family members close by that I love and trust to take care of my daughter, but when I realised she wouldn’t take a bottle I felt the responsibility and pressure of raising my baby overwhelming.

I cried and cried and then it just became a challenge. We tried regularly every week, without tears, frustration, no end date, different methods until it finally clicked 3 months later.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

The advice I wish I was given as a new mum is however tough the current phase or struggle is, it will end and your child will change.

The exclusively breastfed child will wean, the clingy baby will learn to walk, the non-sleeper will sleep, stop sleeping and sleep again.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

To Zion – Lauryn Hill, and everything Motown.
