How to get your toddler to sit still when doing their hair

By Sandy

I love doing my daughter’s hair, which is weird because I hate doing my own.

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with my hair (with more hate than love), which stems from my childhood. It all started when I was told that I had rough hair.

I don’t know what that means.

Either way, my hair texture is low porosity, tightly coiled curls and with improper care will result in tired arms and unpleasant memories which will last a lifetime and will require therapy and a whole lotta Jesus!

But thank God for the turnaround, with the recent increase in natural hair and hair care products, I’ve fallen in love with my coils and my curls are awesome and poppin’!

But enough about me and back to my daughter.

One of the things I anticipated was that I needed to take control of my daughter’s hair care (because babies need us to take care of them, duh!). But first I need her to sit still and let me do her hair.

If you follow me on Instagram (if you don’t click here) you know that Mae and I do some Mommy and Me videos on Instagram live, which revolves around hair care. So here’s how I get her to sit still for me.

1. SNACKS!!!

Snacks are awesome! Who doesn’t like snacks? I always keep a various amount of options. Her snacks range from blueberries to puffs. I stick food items she can pick up by herself is easily chewable.

I don’t know what it is about these Gerber Puffs, but these little star shaped puffs keep my busy body toddler still. She absolutely loves them. So it’s a no-brainer that when I need her to remain focused on anything other than me, I choose these little snacks to keep her nimble fingers occupied.

Her favourite flavours are sweet potato and peach (if anyone wants to get Mercy a gift LOL).

Snacks are a great way to make that hairstyle moment enjoyable for your little one, no matter how restless they get.

Unfortunately it’s not as simple as just snacks. I wish it was. But when Mae isn’t satisfied with my choice of snacks for her. I break out another trick of mine.

2. TV SHOWS

Most of the time, I like being entertained. I don’t know how many times I’ve gotten my hair done or did my own hair and had either music playing in the background or my favourite movie playing in the background.

My darling seems to like it all the same. Her favourite tv show? The Backyardigans.I don’t ask questions, I just put it on and do my best to finish her within that window. Otherwise its a Backyardigan marathon. But I don’t mind, the music is pretty good.

But when she’s really not in the mood of getting her hair which is usually when she’s tired, I use one more trick.

3.TOYS!

Like most children her age, she loves her toys. By toys I mean, whatever makes enough noise to rival a school marching band. Believe me, she can make a whole lot of noise.

Sometimes the xylophone wins, sometimes it’s the rings. But whatever she’s in the mood for, I tend to give in.

I want her to grow up wanting to get her hair, or at least not resent getting her hair done. She has beautiful and I will do my best to teach her to take care of it. But for now I just need her to sit still and let me do what I do.

Please share with me, how you get your little one settled to do their hair.
