Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.
Name & age: Tessa, 26
Kids: Veira (7), Violet (3), Veda (1), Isaac (2 months)
How did you end up doing gentle parenting?
When I got pregnant with my first child I was freshly 18, clueless. I really made a lot of mistakes with my first.
When pregnant with my second daughter I wanted to make a huge change to how our family was.
I decided to start living a more peaceful and organic lifestyle. I changed the way I disciplined, the way my family ate and just all around wanted to make sure I was raising my children in the best way so they can grow up and be good members of society!
What does being a woke mama mean to you?
It means every day I strive to do what’s best for my children in the most peaceful, eco friendly way.
I’m advocating for safe peaceful births and good breastfeeding relationships.
It means my kids know they are endlessly loved and that they are powerful.
Most awesome moment so far?
Tandem nursing my 18 month old and 2 month old successfully. I have been breastfeeding continuously for 3.5 years and this was a huge goal for me.
Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?
My biggest struggle so far was when I completely lost my milk supply in 2017. I was diagnosed with a brain disorder in 2017 and while hospitalized I lost my milk. It was devastating to me and nursling. I worked hard for over a month to relactate and with success I did!
How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?
I work part time and I make sure my caretaker knows our parenting wishes and my views so they are respected while I’m away. Genteel reminders here and there also help.
Any advice you would give to new mums?
Make small goals and stick to them! Anything is possible if you make sure you are head strong in your decisions and put in the work.
You always need to remember your values and what’s important to your family and don’t let the pressures of others crack you.
What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
I am woman by Helen Redd, and Pray for me by Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd
