Woke Mama Mika

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Mika 25

Kids: Noah 3, Atlas 2, Briséis 2.5 months

How did you end up doing gentle parenting?

Wanting to break the cycle of parenting that I experienced in life.

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

Being conscious, self-aware and never taking what anyone says as fact without doing your own independent and in-depth research.

Question EVERYTHING, especially in regards to your children. You are their biggest and often only advocate, so be one.

Most awesome moment so far?

The home-birth of each of my babes and the amazing transformation I experienced through each labor.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Self control and remembering to see the whole picture. My fav coping method is using positive triggers – mine is “safe space”. It draws me back and reminds me what my goal is as a mama. I want to be their safe space no matter the situation.

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I do my best to maintain balance, prioritize and set reasonable expectations for myself. If I start to feel overwhelmed and stressed, I know it’s time I dial back and re-focus my energy so I can be the parent my children deserve.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

Trust your mama gut. If something feels wrong/off don’t hesitate to dig deeper, research and educate yourself until that feeling you have is either confirmed or dismissed through information!
