Woke Mama Leatha

Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.

Name & age: Leatha, 40

Kids: Jaya (13), Raja (11), Tama (7), Hema (5) and Keya (10 months)

How did you end up doing gentle parenting?

It felt right from the moment my first was born.

What does being a woke mama mean to you?

It means constantly seeking the truth so I can empower my kids.

Most awesome moment so far?

So many but one that sticks out is when my then 8 year old daughter refused to participate in a racist song in music class, completely of her own accord. Her actions ultimately resulted in the song being removed from the curriculum.

Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?

Recognizing how much my own childhood wounds were playing out in my relationships with my kids. I am grateful for that though, because it spurred the pursuit of my own healing.

I cope with stress using yoga, essential oils, and overall prioritizing my emotional, physical and spiritual health.

How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?

I have my own business so I decide when I work. But I did work with my older kids, and I did everything I could do advocate for myself and my babies so I could parent the way I wanted. I had bosses who listened to me and I brought my breastfeeding babies to staff meetings and worked from home too.

Any advice you would give to new mums?

You receive divine inspiration for your children in a way that no one else can. Listen to that intuition! And if you have lost touch with your intuition, mother yourself until you trust it again.

What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?

Motown, John Legend, and Lauryn Hill. That is what I sang to her all the time.
