Want to know WTF a Woke Mama is? Each week, we’re introducing awesome women who are making the world a kinder place, one happy baby at a time.
Name & age: Katie, 26
Baby: Scarlett, 18 months
How did you end up doing gentle parenting?
It was always something that felt natural to me. I never knew there even was such a style of parenting until I began to look into it online and see other families raising their little ones the same.
What does being a woke mama mean to you?
It means being aware of the rules and so called “correct ways” of raising kiddos society has in place, and challenging them.
It means never going against your own maternal instinct and always trusting your heart with what is best for your children.
Most awesome moment so far?
Seeing my daughter grow and develop her own feisty personality, while still having manners.
I love seeing her wake up beside me every morning with a big ol’ smile and giving me hugs and kisses.
She knows she is loved and safe with me, and it’s truly the most incredible feeling.
Biggest struggle so far? How do you cope with stressful moments?
The “fourth trimester”, or first three months after birth. I had very bad postpartum anxiety, and it affected me, my husband and Scarlett negatively for the first few months.
To any new mamas facing distressing mental thoughts: don’t be afraid to talk about it or get help!
How do you juggle work with gentle parenting?
I’m currently a stay at home mom, and have no plans to return to work until Scarlett is in school.
I’m thankful my husband and I are able to do this for her: I wouldn’t trade any of these days spent with her for the world.
Any advice you would give to new mums?
Trust your instinct and heart. Research and question everything. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. And always, always, always do what is best for YOUR child.
What’s on your soundtrack to your first year of being a Woke Mama?
Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors” album – Scarlett is obsessed and loves dancing to it, especially Dreams!
