🖤 Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. But what can we do? Well it's our job to let our boys be emotional. Let them know they can be weak. They can be gentle. They can TALK to others when they need to. Because when we don't talk, we're on our own. And when we're on our own, sometimes there is no escape. No hope. Nothing worth living for. . Another thing we can do RIGHT NOW, is support mental health charity @calmzone, which provides support for families affected by suicide as well as a 24/7 helpline for people to talk about their problems. Next month, original Woke Mama Rachel is walking 20 miles overnight to raise money for CALM, following the death of her 20 year old little brother. "If you do this once a month you will get a sense of what is normal for you, then if anything changes you will notice. “Most people with your diagnosis live for between 3 and 5 years.” This is what the oncologist reluctantly said when I pushed him for my prognosis. I wanted to know how long I have left to mother to Sophia. He had told me that my cancer is considered incurable and that I will receive palliative treatment. This is the world’s first ever "magnetic resonance" image showing a mother and child’s bond. It is neuroscientist Rebecca Saxe kissing her two month old son. The child’s brain looks smoother and darker. This is because it has less white matter. White matter is comprised of myelin, which is fatty tissue that acts as insulation for the wires that communicate messages inside your brain. Kissing causes a chemical reaction in your brain, including a burst of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is often referred to as the ‘love hormone’ because it stirs up feelings of affection and attachment. Kissing activates the brain’s reward system; releasing dopamine which makes us feel good. Kids may fry your brain, but they also provide free therapy. As well as holding a sticky mirror up to all of your triggers and behaviours - and forcing you to slow down and live in the ridiculous moment that is parenthood - they also rewrite your inner gloom narrative by totally trashing it. See, free therapy! 🤪 Hang on, I'll explain. Like a lot of new parents, my anxiety, ocd and intrusive thoughts have had a mega comeback since my second was born. Luckily, I had 12 sessions of free CBT, thanks to the NHS prioritising new mums. Feel very privileged for this. One of the best mind tricks I learned from this, was to talk to myself how I'd talk to my kids. Like, I would never put them down, or call them weak, or set impossible standards, or tell them to give up, or that they were worthless. So why would I talk to myself that way? 🧐 It blew my mind.💥 It will obviously take a long time to speak to myself entirely kindly, undoing 35 years of negative self chat. But i am getting there. And it's also a lot easier to control what comes out of my mouth now i'm aware of the fml brain train it came from. Especially because I always have a tiny wide-eyed audience. 👀 Because how I speak of myself, is potentially how they will think of themselves. 👁 Now I never put my appearance, skills or knowledge down, in case they're listening. Gaps in the market we can't believe exist. 👀 Even buggies seem like they haven't been properly tested; like actually used for more than a week, with 7 bags of shopping, off road in a muddy park, with 2 screaming kids -- and all using one hand 🖐. And it's not just cus we are all creative geniuses. (I mean 😏). It's cus men have made most stuff we use, so everything is designed for them and everything else isn't even considered. 🙄 You've all heard the terrrrrifying facts about drug doses and car seat heights based on male standard size, so women are more likely to die. 🖤 Let that one sink in. If you're not scared, you're not paying attention, say the placards. Yeah, we're scared alright. But we also have kids to raise. And how do we talk to them about the future - and ways we can change it - if we're paralyzed with fear? We have to be the grown ups here. 😐 So calmly, confidently, explain things bit by bit as they grow.. but most importantly, always focus on positive actions. Things we can do to make things better. Because if you're faced with all the climate facts at once, as you probably know and feel, it seems hopeless. We obviously can't sugarcoat the #climatecrisis. 🌎 It’s a funny (aka f*cking terrifying) thing, being a parent in 2019. While we wipe up triple regurgitated pasta and catch feels between poo grenades, we know we have 18 months for governments around the world to pull their grubby fingers out and start to cut emissions enough to keep global temperature rise to safe levels by 2030. What that actually means, is that in 18 months we find how soon we’re going to be extinct. . So we do our best to do the green thing, flipping untold textures out of #reusablenappies and unleashing depressing #plasticfreepartybags. 🎉😐 But equally, we have kids. That’s pretty much the worst thing you can do for the environment. And it’s also the scariest thing, when a safe future is so uncertain. But, because we have kids, we’re invested in that future. So we also have hope... 🖤 it's just impossible to explain it all to them. I've tried and failed. . So like all major life drama that I can’t find the words for myself*, there is always books (*like why we should not hit, potty training, getting a new sister, stopping breastfeeding, starting preschool… you name the drama, we’ve read it). 😎 Books ftw. .
